1. Faucets & Sinks
Even the smallest of drips can waste thousands of gallons of water over time, even up to as much as 125 gallons of water a day. Periodically, check under your sinks for small leaks or any sign of moisture. Never put off repairing leaky Phoenix faucets. By putting this off, you are wasting not only precious water, but also you could be doing damage to your pipes and fixtures, as well as receiving higher utility bills.
At least once a year, remove and clean all your aerators to make sure there is an even flow of water. One last thing, check all your overflow holes on the tubs and vanity to make sure they are clear and open, so there won’t be water damage to your ceilings and floors.
2. Water Heater
If you decide to perform any maintenance on your water heater, first and foremost, shut off the power to the water heater and read the owner’s manual thoroughly. We suggest that you drain some water from the tank about four times a year, because over the course of time sediment can build up at the bottom of the heater, which will affect the performance of the water heater, and draining a gallon or so helps to remove the sediment. Another good idea is to periodically inspect your water heater burner. Check the flame. The flame should be blue with a yellow tip. 3. Toilets
As we all know, having a toilet leak can not only be wasteful, but expensive. At least twice a year, check all your toilets to make sure they are working properly, look for any sign of moisture, and check your water usage when your bill arrives. If you suddenly have a spike in gallons used, either there is a leak somewhere, and a toilet may be running more than it should be.
4. Clogs
Make sure that all your tubs and shower drains have a strainer; this way it catches soap and hair residue, and make sure you clean the strainer on a regular basis. Never rinse cooking oils or fats in the kitchen sink. If your drain is completely clogged, do not use a caustic drain opener to unclog it. Those ingredients are trapped in your drain already, and using it could cause damage to the pipes.
